A discovery of human bones, including a skull, prompted a large investigation in suburban Mokena early Wednesday morning, with law enforcement alerting residents that multiple agencies would be in the area as a search continued.
The investigation was taking place in Mokena near Oakwood and Townline, a news release from the Will County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Please be cautious of our personnel and extra vehicles parked in that area,” the sheriff’s office said.
The office was initially called to a field at Oakwood and Townline about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday for “possible remains found” after land surveyors working in the field found what appeared to be a human skull.
An initial search of the property from sheriff’s deputies once they arrived on scene revealed additional bones had been scattered throughout, the release said.
The bones that were recovered were turned over to the Will County Coroner’s Office for processing and for data checking of missing persons cases, the release said.
A search of the field was expected to be at 9 a.m., with Will County Sheriff’s Office of Criminal INvestigations, Crime Scene Investigation, and Will County EMA Search and Rescue expected to be in the area.
