A new documentary for Disney+ has been confirmed which will share Duffy's story with "honesty and courage".
Duffy is a Grammy, BRIT and Ivor Novello award-winning singer who found success with her 2008 multi-platinum album Rockferry, and namely its lead single Mercy. She rose to fame for her unique sound and trademark style reminiscent of the 1960s.
She released a subsequent album in 2010 entitled Endlessly before disappearing from the public eye for a decade.
In 2020, the Welsh singer published a heartbreaking post on her social media revealing that a decade earlier she had been drugged, before being kidnapped and taken to another country, where she said she was held captive and raped.
While she has shared extensive personal accounts to her social media and website about the time, she has never given a traditional interview about the events.
The new Disney+ documentary will be a retrospective film that covers the singer's life, from her upbringing in Wales, through to her staggering rise to fame and her withdrawal from public life following her harrowing experience.
As well as hearing from Duffy herself, the film will feature archive content and interviews with family, friends and close peers in the music industry.
Sean Doyle, vice president of unscripted at Disney+, commented: "Fifteen years ago, Duffy was one of the most famous singers in the world. Her voice was distinctly recognisable and powerful. Songs Mercy and Warwick Avenue from her debut album led to three BRIT Awards, a Grammy and Duffy being at the peak of her career.
"And then she disappeared. This film will give Duffy the chance to tell her story in her own words. I am grateful to our collaborators at Rare TV for this unprecedented access, along with Stellify Media for handling this project with sensitivity and care.
"We set out in a search for impactful, female-led stories in collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen, and it’s a privilege that Duffy's is the first we're able to help tell. But above all, I’m especially in awe of Duffy - for her honesty and courage to share her story."
