A crash involving a semi Wednesday morning in the outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway at Montrose was snarling the busy rush hour commute, with three of four lanes closed and backups already building.
The crash occurred about 6:50 a.m. with still traffic backed up as far as North Avenue, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin said.
“Look at this drive time,” Martin said at 7:20 a.m. “46 minutes is unusual this time in the morning.”
According to the Illinois Police, the crash involved two vehicles, one of which was a truck-tractor semi trailer. One person was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries, and multiple lanes were blocked with debris.
Martin said the semi lost its heavy load on part of the Kennedy Expressway, with about 50 pieces of sheet metal weighing about 700lbs a piece falling off.
“A major alert out to O’Hare or the Edens,” Martin added. “If you need to get out to O’Hare or to work in the north and northwest suburbs, you need to take a detour. You will be stuck in this traffic for the next hour or so.”
Martin recommended taking Milwaukee and getting back on the Kennedy at central, or anywhere past the junction.
“Otherwise, you will definitely be late to where you need to get to.”
