Yograj Singh has taken offence to Ravichandran Ashwin’s comments about his former protege Arjun Tendulkar. A couple of days ago, the former Indian spinners had basically scoffed at the idea of Arjun finding a spot in the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) starting eleven in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

Ashwin didn’t even want to discuss why Arjun won’t feature for Rishabh Pant’s team. But then explained that LSG has a plethora of quality fast bowlers, all of whom are better than Arjun, who is primarily a bowling all-rounder. In his short 5-match IPL career with the Mumbai Indians (MI), Arjun has batted just once, while he’s bowled in each game.
“Arjun Tendulkar khelega hi nahi (Arjun Tendulkar won’t play), and let’s not even go there. I think it is very difficult because there are Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and Mohammad Shami in this lineup. There are so many fast bowlers. How will he play? I don’t think he makes any case unless and until there are a lot of injuries,” Ashwin had said on his YouTube channel.
Yograj thinks Ashwin is talking a whole lot of crap. In an exclusive conversation with InsideSport, the cricketer-turned-coach lashed out at former cricketers who make such comments. He even said that Ashwin was wrong in his assessment, since Arjun is primarily a batter.
“He’s talking bullshit (Ashwin). This guy, whoever he is. I don’t talk to such cricketers who say, ‘Oh, he can’t do this; he can’t do that.’ That’s not a good thing to do in life. I told Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) that all of you are concentrating wrongly on Arjun Tendulkar. He’s not a bowler. He had a spine problem, and now his hand comes from 45 degrees (while bowling),” Yograj told InsideSport.

It makes sense that Yograj doesn’t like hearing anything negative about Arjun. In September 2022, the all-rounder had travelled to Chandigarh to train under him. He spent 12 days with Yuvraj Singh‘s first coach, working on his batting and changing his bowling action. This worked wonders, as 2 months later, Arjun registered his maiden first-class hundred on his Ranji Trophy debut for Goa.
Yograj narrates how everyone has pegged him as a bowler, but like his father, Sachin Tendulkar, Arjun is a batter. He told this to the Goa management and Yuvraj.
“When he was here, I was talking to him. So, I told his coach he was with the Goa team. I told him to pad up. When he was batting in the centre, this guy was hitting sixes. I told the coaches, ‘What the hell are you people doing?’ He is a batsman, like his father (Sachin Tendulkar). He’s not a fast bowler.
I told Yuvi, ‘Sachin is your elder brother, and you love him so much. Don’t you have a duty to do something for Arjun? He said, ‘Dad, what?’ I told him, ‘Arjun is a brilliant batter; concentrate on him.’ He can break the records. I say, if Yuvraj works with Arjun only as a batter, I’ll give you in writing that he’ll prove every damn cricketer in this country wrong. Because I proved it with my son,” he added.

Yograj believes that if he works with Arjun for just 6 months, he’ll make him the greatest batter of all time. He’ll make him bat 15,000 balls in a day. He wants Goa to open with him in the shorter formats and make him bat at one down in the Ranji Trophy. If he’s granted this liberty, he’ll turn Arjun into a legend like Sir Garfield Sobers. If he’s unable to do it, in his own words, Yograj will chop his head off.
“I challenge the whole world that Arjun Tendulkar spending 6 months with me will surpass all the batters in the world. Somebody is sitting in front of the television and talking about how he can’t do this or that. In response, I say, ‘Who are you?’ When cricketers talk like this, it’s shocking.
Arjun Tendulkar can become the most destructive batter in the world. If anybody can’t do it, send him to me. I’ll chop my head off if I can’t do it. But he needs to bat 15,000 balls a day. I see him in the league of Sir Garfield Sobers. He made a hundred in his Ranji Trophy debut while batting at number 7. Told his coaches to play him at number 3 and make him open in List A and T20s. But they didn’t listen. Give me Arjun Tendulkar; I’ll make him the greatest of all time,” Yograj concluded on the matter.
