The Al-Mokattam Misdemeanor Court, in Cairo, acquitted on Tuesday a man accused of harassing a woman on a public bus, and dismissed the civil suit.
The incident sparked widespread controversy after a video circulated on social media, in which the woman claimed she was harassed at a bus stop and followed onto a bus, leading to an altercation without any intervention from other passengers.
The case first dates to late February, after a private sector employee alleged that the suspect verbally harassed and stalked her from her workplace to a public transport vehicle.
To secure evidence and seek help, the victim recorded the encounter on her mobile phone and shared the footage online.
Security authorities identified the suspect, a resident of Daqahliya, by analyzing CCTV footage and tracking his route. After a full investigation into the victim’s digital evidence and the suspect’s statements, the Prosecution finalized the charges of public harassment.
