Liam Livingstone survives as Rob Key confirms England spot after shocking interview claims

Experienced England all-rounder Liam Livingston is up for selection for the national cricket team, Rob Key, managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), confirmed days after the cricketer's explosive remarks over the board's man management.

During an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Livingston accused the ECB of not providing him with an explanation as to why he was not selected for the team. The all-rounder has not played for England since last year's Champions Trophy and lost his central contract in September.

The cricketer claimed that he received a phone call from the head coach Brendon McCullum, and Key to inform him about the snub.

"I don't think [the call] would have reached a minute. I asked why, and they said they wanted to try someone else. That was off Baz [McCullum]," Liam Livingston said, describing the phone calls.

"Keysy said nothing - he said 'I'll speak to you in the summer'. I actually rang him one day, and he said he was busy at a Test camp at Loughborough. And then I didn't hear from him until the end of September."

ECB's decision to drop Livingston from the team came after the team's poor performance in the Champions Trophy, where they lost all three of their matches before exiting. Livingston's highest score in the campaign was only 14.

In a recent interview, Rob Key mentioned that a Livingston is also in contention to make a place in the team. There's no way a cricket like the cricketer of the calibre, who is 32, will consider retirement from international cricket.

Livingston again can be up for selection

"Look, I'm not going to go into private conversations. Obviously, there's another side to that conversation as I saw it. What I did say to Liam at the end of what was a fairly tetchy phone call to say the least [was that] there's no way I see a player of Liam Livingstone's ability not being up for selection for England," Rob Key told Sky Sports.

Key also claimed that they thought about the middle-order batter for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in January.

"We debated him for the Sri Lanka series. Liam Livingstone is very much a player that we would love to see back to his best, scoring runs, and then back in the England set-up", he said.

He could be the captain of the team

The managing director of ECB claimed that at one point they thought to appoint Liam Livingston as the captain of the team, referring to an ODI series against West Indies in late 2024.

"We thought as much of him [as] to make him captain at one stage, when we didn't have all the senior players there. That's how highly we thought of him. I still have a huge amount of time for Liam Livingstone and there's no [reason] that someone at 32's England career should be over," Rob Key added.
