Discussion on Impact Player rule at IPL 2026 Captains’ meet after Axar Patel’s disapproval

One of the most talked-about, if not controversial, rule in the IPL has been the impact sub rule, which was introduced by the BCCI during the 2023 edition. The rule allows each team to substitute a player from four named substitutes during a match, who can bat and bowl their full quota of overs, in or before the 14th over of each innings.

In the three editions in which the impact sub rule has been used, a few prominent players have already spoken against it. The latest to join the list is India T20I vice-captain Axar Patel, who bluntly put it, “I don’t like it”. The others are — Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya.

I don’t like this rule as I am all rounder myself (laughs). Earlier we used to pick all-rounders for this role (batting and bowling). Now, since the team management goes with a particular batter or bowler, the role of an all-rounder becomes subdued. Rules are rules and we have to follow them, but personally I don’t like itAxar Patel on Impact Sub rule

What is the criticism against Impact-sub rule?

Reduction in need of all-rounders: The players have argued, that the rule reduces the need for an all-rounder in the team, and only specialists get picked.

Lack of growth of all-rounders: This rule hampers the growth of the all-rounders domestically, which doesn’t augur well for the Indian team.

12 vs 12: A captain just cannot plan enough for a the impact sub player. Imagine a scenario, where SRH are struggling to chase 210, are reduced to 110/5 for 13 overs. Ishan Kishan decides to sub Unadkat for Aniket Verma; earlier, if the rule had not existed, the team would have entered the lower-middle order or all-rounder, but here Verma would be a specialist batter who could change the complexion of the match.

What can be done about Impact sub rule in IPL?

Introduced in 2023, the rule is here to stay until 2027, which will mark the completion of a 5-year circle. Apart from that, there might not be any immediate change to it; but as per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI is all set to discuss the impact sub rule at the IPL captains meet. Though it is still unclear, what entails the discussion.

What else will be discussed at IPL captains meet?

At the IPL captain’s meet, the BCCI will talk about the rule changes (if any), with the respective skippers, and also the code of conduct rules. Apart from the Impact sub rule, also up for discussion would be — the innings timer (60-second clock), and the concussion substitute clause.

Also, there will be discussions about the two-bouncer rule, bat checks, ball replacement, use of saliva and the retired-out provision. BCCI heads for match referees and umpires, Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon will also address the captains, in a meeting that is scheduled to take place between 4.30 PM to 6 PM IST.

Meanwhile, a few playing conditions have been revised by the BCCI, and the same have been shared already with all the teams. There have been changes pertaining to Rule 4.4 (change of ball in the second innings); 5.8.3 (bat checks); 18.5.1 and 18.5.2 (deliberate short runs); 19.5.2 (fielder grounded beyond the boundary); 28.7.6 (restriction on the placement of the fielder); and Appendix D-3.9 (combining umpire review with player review).
