GREECE, N.Y. — A fencing club in Greece is gearing up for its first-ever tournament for people 60 and older, aiming to give older fencers a chance to compete and learn new skills.
Ludus Fencing Club says fencing is one of the fastest-growing sports among older adults. The club is partnering with Forever Sporting to organize the tournament on Saturday, April 4.
Most of the veteran fencing leagues start at 40 years old. Tomi Lahcanski, founder of Forever Sporting, says he started the tournament to give athletes a chance to compete with others in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.
The tournament at the club on 25 Arcampus Drive is open to men and women from across the northeastern U.S. and Canada. At the tournament, people can take on Thomas Mahnken, the top-ranked foil fencer in the U.S. for the 60 and over age group, for a chance to win a ceremonial mask chord.
Rochester is home to multiple Olympic fencers, including 2000 Sydney Olympian Iris Zimmermann and 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympian Felicia Zimmermann.
