At Iowa last year, Alcantara hit .266/.349/.470/110 wRC+, but got better and better as the year went on. He has a bright future in the big leagues thanks to his plus glove in the outfield and his offensive upside, but there is still some work to be done against offspeed pitches if he really wants to maximize that upside. I tentatively expect we’ll see him again at some point this year when the opportunities inevitably arise.
Meanwhile, Alcantara to Iowa – where Chas McCormick is expected to begin, also, after getting over a shoulder issue – means that Dylan Carlson is very likely making the team. Signed to a minor league deal in the hopes the Cubs could help him bounce back, the former top prospect (and formerly very good outfielder) will get a shot to contribute off of the Cubs’ bench. That non-catcher group now figures to be Carlson, Conforto (or you could count him as the right fielder), Matt Shaw, and another infielder, either Scott Kingery or someone the Cubs pick up last-minute from here.
