MARCY, N.Y. — A former prison guard sentenced in the beating death of inmate and Greece native Robert Brooks has been transferred out of New York.
News10NBC’s affiliate in Utica reports that the State Department of Corrections confirmed that Nicholas Anzalone was transferred to the custody of the Maine Department of Corrections.
“On March 5, 2026, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) transferred incarcerated individual Nicholas Anzalone from New York State custody to the custody of the Maine Department of Corrections pursuant to the Interstate Corrections Compact between the State of New York and the State of Maine. The Compact permits participating states to transfer incarcerated individuals under specified circumstances,” the department told our affiliate.
DOCCS also said Anzalone’s continued placement in a facility in the state “posed significant safety and security concerns for the individual, correctional staff, and the broader incarcerated population.”
In November, Anzalone was sentenced to 22 years in prison for manslaughter in Brooks’ death. He was originally charged with murder, but accepted a plea deal that reduced his sentence.
Former guards Anthony Farina, Michael Mashaw, and David Walters also accepted plea deals. Farina was also sentenced to 22 years in prison. Mashaw was sentenced to three to nine years in prison, and Walters was sentenced to two and one-third years to seven years.
Bodycam footage shows the guards beating Brooks in a medical exam room in December. He died in the hospital the next day.
In total, 10 guards were indicted in Brooks’ death. In December, former guard David Kinsley was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murder and manslaughter. Two others, Nicholas Kieffer and Matthew Galliher, were acquitted of all charges in Brooks’ death.
