On March 22, 2026, at his home in the Rock City community of Smith County, Haskell Wayne Jenkins, known affectionately as “Wayne,” passed away at the age of 74.

He was born on August 13, 1951, at Dr. Wilson’s office in Carthage, Tennessee, the first son of Hamilton Haskell Jenkins and Anne Elizabeth Frye Jenkins. From the very beginning, his life was rooted in family, land, and a legacy that would stretch far beyond his years.

To those who come after him—his children, grandchildren, and even generations yet to be born—know this: he was a man who loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and walked faithfully with the Lord.

He was a farmer in every sense of the word, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfathers. The land was not just his livelihood—it was his calling. He found joy in caring for cattle, plowing fields, and working from sunup into the afternoon before heading to his second job at Dana Corporation. Saturdays were often spent spraying tobacco for neighbors, serving his community as readily as he served his family. Whether raising tobacco, hay, corn, soybeans, hogs, sheep for his children’s 4-H projects, or even a goat he was glad to part with, he lived a life of purpose and provision. In later years, he took pride in caring for his wife’s lambs—though not without good-natured teasing.

He was a giant of a man—strong in body, steadfast in character, and generous in heart. His love for his wife, Cathy Hix Jenkins, never wavered throughout 52 years of marriage, beginning on April 1, 1973. From that love grew a family: children Dr. Angela Marie Jenkins Lane (husband Alan), Rachel Dawn Jenkins Carson (husband Greg), Dr. Amanda Jean Jenkins Wesson (husband Anthony), and Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins Lankford (husband Jacob); grandchildren Dr. Allison Marie Lane Smith (husband Jason Robert), Thomas Alan Lane (Ali Bledsoe), Robert Wayne Carson, Autumn Elise Wesson, and Avery Mai Wesson; and great-grandchild Silas Lane Smith. He is also survived by his siblings, Kenneth Harold Jenkins (wife Beth) and Jennifer Jenkins McKinney (husband Dale).

His life was marked by resilience and grace. In September 2005, he received the gift of a liver transplant that sustained him for more than 20 years—a second chance he never took for granted. Though he faced liver disease, heart failure, and lung cancer, his faith remained unshaken.

He was a man of deep and abiding faith in Christ. A devoted church member, he rarely missed a service and consistently pointed his family toward the Lord. Even in his final days, his greatest desire was that those he loved would know Jesus Christ as their Savior. If he could speak to you now, he would remind you: hold fast to the truth that Christ died for your sins, His love never fails, and there is no greater purpose in life than to follow Him.

He was also known for his humor, his thoughtful nature, and his steady wisdom. He studied life carefully, approached decisions with intention, and never missed an opportunity to share a laugh—often at the playful expense of his beloved wife.

A private graveside service will be held at his final resting place on the farm he loved. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, March 28, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. then service at 5pm at Rome Baptist Church.

The family has requested memorials to the Rome Baptist Church.

His legacy is not only in the land he tended, but in the faith he planted—one that will, by God’s grace, continue to grow for generations to come.
