Day 63 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Nothing announces the arrival of spring in Chicago like going from baseball weather on Saturday to football-ish climates on Sunday. At least Monday begins with some sunshine.

ICYMI: The Seattle Seahawks are set to make Jaxon Smith-Njigba the NFL’s highest-paid receiver. Once the deal becomes officially official, JSN will receive more than $120 million in guarantees as part of a deal that pays him north of $42 million per year. With the Seahawks being on the Bears’ schedule in 2026, I hope Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen will be ready to cook up a plan to slow down one of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons. While it is on our mind, here is a quick look at Chicago’s cornerbacks depth chart: Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, Jaylon Jones, Josh Blackwell, Terell Smith, Dallis Flowers, Zah Frazier, and Dontae Manning. I haven’t done much digging on cornerback prospects who are eligible to be selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. But one cursory glance at this group of corners has put that on my to-do list. Drafting a safety seems more likely right now than taking a cornerback. But that doesn’t mean the Bears shouldn’t add to the cornerbacks room. However, if they don’t, then I will strap in for a battle between Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith for the opportunity to start opposite Jaylon Johnson as a boundary corner. Both players have had moments where they flashed the ability to be a capable NFL starter. And both players enter the 2026 campaign in the final year of their respective rookie contracts. Save for the left tackle competition, there isn’t a more compelling roster battle than the one that could be coming at cornerback.SUBSCRIBE TO THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
I love following The Athletic’s beat writer mock draft series this time of year. Not only does it give us an idea of what the upcoming NFL Draft could look like, but we are getting it from the perspective of the folks in the trenches covering their respective teams. It is a unique exercise, and also an informative one. When it comes to the Bears, Dan Wiederer sends Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren to Chicago with the No. 25 pick. Here is his explanation:One thing has become apparent during all these pre-draft exercises: The menu of players available at No. 25 is consistently appealing. In this instance, the depth of the edge rusher class helps swing things in McNeil-Warren’s favor, with the Bears adding another weapon to the back end of their defense. Speed: check. Size: check. Passion: check. Playmaking ability: check. General manager Ryan Poles has long contended that safety is the hardest position to evaluate for the draft. But energetic, productive players like McNeil-Warren make it easier. His physicality and fluidity will pair well with newcomer Coby Bryant.
I’m digging EMW’s prospect profile. The Toledo product is on my radar as an ideal fit for the Bears in the 2026 NFL Draft. And if the team believes it can land a quality edge defender or interior defensive lineman with picks later in the draft, then I would be OK with the team snagging a safety with its first-round selection. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Romance-Imagn Images MORE MOCK DRAFT CHATTER! Pete Prisco (CBS Sports) just dropped his first mock draft. In it, he sends Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods to Chicago. “He played heavy last year, and didn’t play as well,” Prisco writes. “That’s why he’s down this far in the draft. But Woods was once considered a top-10 talent and his weight is down.” For what it’s worth, Prisco has Woods as the top-ranked player in his position group. If the Bears can snag a player of his caliber with pick No. 25 at an important position (one the team needs to fill with some high-octane talent), then I’d be OK with that on draft night. One last mock draft nugget: The latest from Pro Football Focus has the Bears taking Florida interior defensive lineman Caleb Banks. And for what it’s worth, I understand the reasoning from Jordan Plocher:None of the Bears’ interior defensive linemen notched a PFF run-defense grade above 56.0 in 2025, so addressing that early in the 2026 NFL Draft is a good way to fix the run defense. Caleb Banks is a massive presence in the interior at 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds with an 85 3/4-inch wingspan.
Banks tallied just 13 career run stops due to injuries, but the Bears are banking on his upside here. While Banks recently suffered a foot injury at the combine, head coach Ben Johnson isn’t going anywhere soon, so Chicago can take its time getting Banks fully healthy and ready to go.
There is debate to be had about Banks’ fit on a Dennis Allen-coached defense. However, I wonder if Banks’ injury might take him completely off the Bears’ board. Days after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred hitched his wagon to Polymarket, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio shares details of a new bipartisan bill that would ban prediction markets for sporting events. What an interesting turn of events this could be, depending on the outcome.MORE BEARS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
