The Blackhawks aren’t practicing today after playing three tough games in four days. That’s understandable; they’ll jump on a plane to one of the airports in New York City and start a four-game road trip that begins with the a look at Matthew Schaefer and the New York Islanders tomorrow night.
But today being an understandable non-practice day is what makes things hard for coaches in the position of Blackhawks’ bench boss Jeff Blashill in this part of the season. Before the game yesterday, Blashill talked about the struggle of trying to integrate young players like Anton Frondell and (at some point) Sacha Boisvert because there’s just no time for practices.
The Blackhawks will play four games in six days on the upcoming road trip (with one of those days being travel from New York to Philly and the other in the middle of three games in four days). They’ll then come home for a stand alone game against the Jets before hitting the road for a three-game road trip on the opposite side of the continent to where they’ll play this week. Whomever made the schedule for this season really… (shakes fist).
After the game last night, Blashill was very complimentary of Nick Lardis‘ performance when I asked him about getting a full game of run on a line with Frank Nazar and Tyler Bertuzzi. The Blackhawks head coach said he thought last night was Lardis’ best game since he was recalled from Rockford this time — because he skated. Which, of course, makes many of us wonder what took so long to give those three an extended look. Good on Lardis for taking advantage of the situation and making it count. The Blackhawks lost a tough one to a hot Nashville Predators last night. That Nashville team that wakes up on Monday morning in the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, thanks in large part to a four-game win streak they extended in Chicago. The Predators are only 10 points ahead of the Blackhawks in the standings. There are six teams between the Blackhawks and that second wild card spot in the Western Conference. But being better in overtime and the shootout could have changed where our focus is as Blackhawks fans right now. As Ben Pope wrote after the game, being able to finish in OT could have had the Blackhawks much closer to a more exciting conversation in the final weeks of the regular season. The difference between the Blackhawks, Sharks and Ducks this season largely comes down to overtime/shootout success.Ducks: 15-4Sharks: 12-6Hawks: 7-13Postgame story after the Hawks' latest OT loss: t.co/p7p2aJJ90j
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) March 22, 2026 Matt Grzelcyk suffered an awkward injury last night that saw him leave the ice in a great deal of pain after skating less than two minutes. After the game, Blashill said Grzelcyk is out for this upcoming four-game road trip and they’ll get some more evaluation of the injury in the coming days. Here’s what Blashill said about André Burakovsky‘s performance after the game last night:“We need production out of him. We all get that, he gets that. Sometimes you don’t totally control that. I thought his effort’s been great, and he played with confidence tonight. Sometimes… you can tell [a guy] doesn’t have confidence. He looks like he has confidence, but he’s certainly snake-bitten. I would say historically, if he keeps getting those chances, it’ll happen for him.”
The 2025-26 OHL regular season came to a close on Sunday. And, for the second straight season, a Blackhawks prospect skating for the Brantford Bulldogs claimed the scoring title. Marek Vanacker‘s 47 goals were good enough for the crown this year, one better than fellow Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham. Alex Ovechkin made a little more history on Sunday afternoon, scoring the 1,000th goal between the regular season and playoffs of his NHL career. Only Wayne Gretzky had previously been able to claim 1,000 total goals in his NHL career. Truly remarkable.BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
