The Youngstown State softball team swept a doubleheader against Detroit Mercy on Saturday, winning 8-0 in Game 1 and 10-4 in Game 2 to capture a series victory against the Titans to begin Horizon League play after dropping the series opener on Friday night.
Freshman Kennedy Kimball pitched 11.1 innings and picked up two wins, while three different players hit home runs for the Penguins.
Junior Selah Moyer went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and six RBIs while seniors Kennedy Dean and Emma Gilkerson each hit home runs to lead Youngstown State, which improves to 13-11 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play. The Titans fall to 7-18 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Kimball earner her third and fourth victories of the season and notched her second career shutout in the game one win. In game one, Kimball allowed just one hit and faced one batter above the minimum.
In Game 1, the Penguins scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another in the fourth to secure their first conference win.
In Game 2, the Penguins used two big innings to rally from an early 3-0 deficit and pull away for the win.
Lydia Wilkerson went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in while Moyer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Penguins offense. Kimball allowed four hits and struck out seven in 6.1 innings of relief to earn her second win of the day.
