In just under one hour, groups of no more than six people were put into the role of world-class thieves locked in a fictional police department. Their objective was to recover evidence, secure money and escape confinement as part of the Bama Theme Park Engineering and Design Club’s escape room, hosted at the Student Center on March 12.
Rebecca Maddox, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering and Bama TPED competition coordinator, said the group wanted to ensure that the story behind the room made sense, and that the puzzles within the escape room were challenging yet feasible.
Participants appreciated the challenge that the escape room provided as well as the relief it offered from the busyness of the week prior to spring break.
“I don’t normally get in a flow state like that, just thinking non-stop to figure out how to get to the next step. But it really got that part of me going, and it was kind of thrilling,” said Henry Williams, a freshman majoring in electrical engineering.
John Emerson, a senior mechanical engineering major, said that he knew the experience would not resemble professional escape rooms, but the experience was still “able to perplex” him.
Eric Johnson, a junior majoring in advertising and former president of Bama TPED, also participated in the escape room. He said the group had briefly mentioned the idea of an escape room during his time in the organization.
“We kind of threw around the idea, but after I left last semester, they kind of just took it and ran with it,” Johnson said. “I’m glad they took that idea because they did an outstanding job with all the puzzles and the environment.”
Rianna Cassibry, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering and president of the organization, said she hoped that this event would help get the organization’s name out to the campus community. They aimed to not only foster engagement, but to promote the organization and their mission of redefining the image of engineering by showing the different roles an engineer can hold.
“Not all engineering is behind a computer or a desk job,” Cassibry said. “There can be a lot of exciting ways to do engineering. There’s a lot of art and story involved.”
Cassibry said she hopes to work with University Programs on future events, helping to make them more intriguing and story involved.
