No. 4 Alabama gymnastics placed fourth in the SEC Championships on Saturday evening with a score of 197.475.
“This team’s mission tonight is really to go all in to give it every bit of heart that they possibly could to the moment,” said head coach Ashley Johnston. “I really feel like walking away, we did that tonight.”
Alabama competed in the evening session against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU, and No. 3 Florida. In the afternoon session, No. 5 Arkansas, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Missouri, No. 8 Auburn, and No. 9 Kentucky competed.
Florida placed first with 198.175, Oklahoma took second with 198.15, LSU took third with 197.95, Georgia placed fifth with 197.45, Missouri took sixth with 197.075, Arkansas took seventh with 196.975, Kentucky took eighth with 196.925, and Auburn placed ninth with 195.3.
Rotation 1
For the first rotation, as the fourth seed, Alabama started on the floor. Oklahoma was on the vault, LSU was on the uneven bars, and Florida was on the balance beam. On the floor, the Crimson Tide posted a 49.425.
Gabby Gladieux had the highest floor score for Alabama with a 9.95.
Gladieux shared the floor champion title with Oklahoma’s Keira Wells, Mackenzie Estep, and LSU’s Kaliya Lincoln.
“I think every single Bama fan can attest that is well deserved, well earned, and just so excited for her to see all of the work kind of come to play tonight,” said Johnston.
Rotation 2
Alabama moved to the vault for the second rotation, Oklahoma moved to the uneven bars, LSU moved to the balance beam, and Florida moved to the floor. On the vault, Alabama posted a 49.175. This brought its total score to 98.6.
After two rotations, LSU had a 98.975, Florida had a 98.95, and Oklahoma had a 98.925.
Freshman Azaraya Ra-Akbar made a 9.9 on the vault as Alabama’s highest scorer.
LSU’s Kailin Chio took the uneven bars champion title with a 9.975.
Rotation 3
The Crimson Tide moved to the uneven bars for rotation three and made a 49.4 bringing its total to 148. Oklahoma was on the balance beam, LSU was on the floor, and Florida was on the vault.
Ra-Akbar and sophomore Ryan Fuller each made a 9.9 on the uneven bars to mark Alabama’s highest score.
Florida’s Selena Harris-Miranda scored a perfect 10 and was named the uneven bars champion.
Rotation 4
Alabama was on the balance beam for the final rotation and posted a 49.475. Oklahoma was on the floor, LSU was on the vault, and Florida was on the uneven bars.
Sophomore Kylee Kvamme posted a 9.95 as the Crimson Tide’s highest balance beam scorer.
“I think finishing on beam was such a strong performance, was a great confidence builder for our group,” Johnston said. “They are a phenomenal beam team and just have had a couple hiccups over the last few weeks, so I was really excited for them to put that behind them.”
Oklahoma’s Faith Torrez scored a perfect 10 on the balance beam and was crowned balance beam champion.
The SEC all-around champion was LSU’s Chio, who scored a 39.775.
On Monday, the NCAA will host a selection show at noon ET for the dance to the National Championship.
