As Ben Pope appropriately wrote on Saturday, “the endless debate about Connor Bedard’s linemates is about to change.” That’s because Anton Frondell is coming soon! Djurgårdens season ended, and the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft will be on his way to join the Blackhawks likely during the upcoming four-game trip. Frondell and Sacha Boisvert could both make their debuts on the trip.
For all of the folks who have been saying the Blackhawks “have to” or “must” or are “required to” make a trade for a better top-six forward who can score, Frondell and Roman Kantserov are the internal options we should want to see before making a significant commitment. The great news is we should get about ten games of run from Frondell before this regular season ends for the Blackhawks to evaluate how he fits on Bedard’s wing.
I appreciate that Ben Pope also preached the patience that I sometimes feel like I’m alone in extolling. He wrote:
Just remember how fantastic defensemen Sam Rinzel looked in the final nine games of last season, for example, and how much he struggled during the middle portion of this season. It’s an extremely nonlinear process.
Just because Frondell was a high pick and had a historic season in the SHL doesn’t mean he won’t struggle. Rinzel has had his moments. Artyom Levshunov has obviously been the target of fans’ angst more than he’s earned. Plenty of forwards have had their ups and downs. Player development is an evolution, and, as Ben wrote, it’s not linear.
Hopefully Frondell’s on Bedard’s wing in place of André Burakovsky. Hey, we’ve got a 2 PM puck drop at the United Center today! Isn’t that fun? I do love me some afternoon Blackhawks action, especially when it’s against a team the Blackhawks could/should beat. The Nashville Predators are in town today. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill already told us that defenseman Louis Crevier and forward Sam Mangiapane won’t play today because of injury, so expect the same lineup as Friday night. One more hit from Ben Pope this morning, this one on the incoming salary cap explosion in the NHL — and fears that some teams being able to afford the floor could be problematic.Thirteen NHL franchises, including the Blackhawks, brought in $250+ million in revenue in 2024-25, per Forbes.Eleven franchises brought in less than $220 million. Will that gap start to affect spending as the salary cap skyrockets?Story: t.co/VSgFIFm28f
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) March 21, 2026 With the top playoff seed secured, Kitchener opted to not play Blackhawks prospect Jack Pridham last night. That means Marek Vanacker will be your 2025-26 OHL goals champion. Today is the final day of the OHL regular season. Nathan Behm skated in his 200th career WHL game last night. Today is also the final day of the WHL season. Behm finished up with 86 points (38 goals, 48 assists) in 67 games. A big, impressive night for the IceHogs. Chase Dafoe made his pro debut and scored two goals, and Brett Seney became the Rockford organization’s all-time leader in game-winning goal. What a debut for our newcomer ? pic.twitter.com/4rdrgFv5ER
