Peptides are trending big in the beauty industry, and along with finding them in lots of anti-aging serums and moisturizers, they’re also in lip balms—specifically in a new wave of peptide-infused lip treatments designed to nourish and subtly enhance lip volume.
Unlike traditional lip balms that simply hydrate the lips, peptide lip treatments have active ingredients that work beneath the surface to improve the condition of lips long-term. These formulas are designed to support the delicate skin of the lips and help them appear smoother with regular use.
According to Dr. Marie Jhin, board certified dermatologist at Premier Aesthetic Dermatology, peptide lip products represent the next generation of lip care. “Peptides are short-chain amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the skin,” she tells Parade. “Unlike standard lip balms that just sit on the surface, peptide lip treatments can help stimulate collagen production and support the lip area over time.”
Dermatologist Marisa Garshick of Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Centers explains these formulas can provide both immediate hydration and longer-term benefits for the lips.
Ahead, they share how peptide lip treatments work—and which formulas are worth adding to your routine.

A peptide lip treatment simply refers to a lip care product formulated with peptides. The peptides "act as building blocks for proteins like collagen," Dr. Garshick says. "Because lips lack oil glands, these formulas often combine peptides with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or nourishing oils to keep lips soft and hydrated."
Peptides are widely used in skincare and have been shown to support collagen production and improve overall skin texture. Since the lips contain relatively little collagen, they may respond particularly well to peptide-based formulas.
“Peptide lip treatments can help lips appear more hydrated and less wrinkled,” says Dr. Jhin. “However, they won’t produce dramatic plumping like injectable fillers.”
Garshick agrees that while the changes are subtle, they can still make a noticeable difference over time.
“Peptide lip treatments can be helpful, especially with consistent use,” she explains. “They support collagen and improve hydration, which may make lips appear smoother and gradually fuller.”
What Are the Benefits of Peptides in Lip Care?
Peptides can offer several advantages for the delicate lip area when used regularly.
According to Dr. Garshick, one of the main benefits is improved collagen support, which may also improve firmness and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the lips.
They also work to strengthen the skin barrier and prevent skin roughness, Dr. Garshick says.

Consistency plays an important role in seeing results. Dr. Jhin recommends applying peptide lip treatments twice daily—morning and night—as part of a regular skincare routine.
They can also be reapplied throughout the day if additional hydration is needed, Dr. Garshick adds. “In most cases, peptide lip treatments can be used daily and even multiple times per day,” she says. “Since peptides work gradually, consistent use helps maximize their benefits.”

Can Peptide Lip Treatments Replace Lip Balm?
Many peptide lip treatments are formulated with the same ingredients as traditional lip balms, so in most cases you can replace it, both dermatologists say.
Dr. Garshick notes that these formulas are essentially a more advanced version of everyday lip care. They combine peptides with typical moisturizers like hyaluronic acid, oils, shea butter, squalane or petrolatum to help seal in hydration while also delivering active ingredients, she says.
“But if you’re spending time outdoors or dealing with harsh weather, layering a lip balm with SPF can provide extra protection,” Dr. Jhin adds.

Peptide lip treatments can be especially helpful for lips that frequently feel dry. They can replenish moisture while supporting the skin barrier, which can reduce dryness and flaking over time, according to Dr. Garshick.
However, extremely chapped lips may require additional care. “For severely dry lips, using a thicker moisturizing ointment can help lock in hydration,” she says. Consulting a dermatologist can also help determine whether an underlying condition is contributing to the dryness.
Can Peptides Make Lips Look Fuller?
Peptides can help improve the appearance of fullness by supporting collagen and improving hydration levels. As the lip structure becomes better supported, the lips may look smoother and slightly more defined.
“Peptides can help lips appear fuller by supporting collagen and improving hydration,” Garshick explains. “However, they’re designed to enhance the natural appearance of the lips rather than replace in-office treatments like fillers.”
Dr. Jhin agrees. The mechanism is different from a filler. A peptide treatment stimulates collagen and "as the lip's collagen matrix is rebuilt, lips can appear more structured, defined and volumized from within."
While the results are subtle, regular use may help create a softer, more hydrated and naturally plumper look.
