*Warning - contains major spoilers for The Capture season 3 episode 3.*
We're now at the midway point of The Capture season 3, and even after some huge, shocking moments in earlier instalments, one particular moment in episode 3 stood out - the death of Frank Napier.
Ron Perlman's character has been seen throughout all three seasons of the show, and in episode 3 was roped in by Holliday Grainger's Rachel Carey to perform 'enhanced interrogation' on Killian Scott's Noah Pierson.
No matter how much psychological or physical torture Napier put him through, Pierson wouldn't reveal anything about his apparent involvement in Isaac Turner's assassination.
At the end of the episode, Pierson managed to overpower Frank's underlings, grabbing hold of a gun and killing them all. Finally, he tracked down Frank, who was struggling to get through a locked door. He told him, "Thank you for your service", and took him out with a gunshot to the head.
Radio Times caught up exclusively with The Capture's creator Ben Chanan, and asked him how it was decided that now was the time for Frank to bite the dust, while noting that it can't have been an easy decision.
"It was quite an easy decision," he countered, "because I'd think to myself, as I was writing it, 'This is going to be the last series.' Now, is that true? I don't know. Never say never, right? But I think it's really healthy to just write each series as if it's going to be the last, that you're not just hanging on to people for the sake of it."
Chanan continued: "I'm very, very fussy about the series midpoint. If you look at the last two seasons, the episode 3s are usually one of the best, if not the best episodes in the season, and that's because I want something big to happen in the midpoint. And there's nothing much bigger than killing off Frank.
"I think Anthony Philipson, our lead director, did such a phenomenal job killing him. It was clearly directed by someone who loves Ron Perlman, as I do, and I think that really, really shows.
"I spoke to Ron beforehand, I said, 'Look, it’s the last season, you're going out with a bang.' And he was fine with it, he was glad of it. I think actors don't mind dying in a series, particularly if it's probably going to be the last one, but also, if you give them a really good send off."
Following his escape from Frank's capture, Pierson went back to HQ, where he acted as if nothing was wrong. He then approached Carey, who was stunned to see him there, and quietly told her: "There's only one way through this Rachel, for me and for you - together".
Exactly what this means remains to be seen, but it certainly seems as though Carey is on the back foot once again, and is now left without one of her most surprising, yet most crucial allies.
Ahead of episode 3 airing, Chanan had told us he thought it was "the best episode we’ve ever made." Now that fans have had a chance to see it, they will be able to weigh in on whether they agree, but one thing's for certain - it has definitely shaken things up heading into the back half of the season.
The Capture season 3 will continue on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 29 March 2026.
