LA JOLLA – Quinn Obrigewitch, whose last name is a mouthful, looks pretty chill. He’s waiting – the l-o-n-g wait — for the third flight in the shot put at the Viking Sunset Relays. The better you are, the longer you wait. The novices throw first, then, literally hours later, in this stack of 36 throwers, the longer-distance high school seniors and juniors get to step into the circle.

“He’s always relaxed,” offers his coach, Mark McPherson, standing aside him with teammate Tristan Shoemaker, also waiting for the third flight.

Obrigewitch – his dad’s family name points to “noble” or “brave” in Eastern Europe, “witch” meaning a familial lineage – stands in the morning shade of a storage building a short distance from the shot put circle. The University City High School senior’s not in a hurry.

His throws coach pipes up, “He has the second-longest throw in the county so far (49 feet, 2 inches). And that’s drawing attention from track fans and media.

“You’d better get used to it,” McPherson tells his mentee. “This is the way it’s going to be.”

Obrigewitch says he relaxes to Linkin Park and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, and mentions the song “Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog. It’s a dark protest song about people starving while the rich get richer. Interesting stuff for a UCHS student.

What’s working in the shot? “Keeping my feet under me, and staying low,” he says. The Centurion athlete also plays football, like Shoemaker, but on opposite ends of the offensive line: left tackle for Obrigewitch and right guard for Shoemaker.

Obrigewitch, who prefers his dad Clint’s ribeye steaks cooked medium rare, has among the track team’s highest grades, though, as he says, “I don’t study.”

Shoemaker, on the other hand, is two years younger and striving to close the seven-foot gap between his shot distance (42 feet, 11.5 inches) and his teammate’s. “My glide technique (dragging his foot as he moves to launch the 12-pound metal object) is working. Spinning, which coach (McPherson) is trying to teach me, is kind of hard.”

Don’t tell his football coach, but Shoemaker says he enjoys the throws more than football. “I like getting a PR (personal record). It feels good. I can tell when a PR is.” The fact that he can measure his progress in the sport is a rare case of easy-to-recognize progress in this world, where feedback isn’t always provided.

“I enjoy hanging out with friends, playing video games with them,” the amiable and respectful sophomore says.

On this day, early in the spring track schedule, the senior Obrigewitch threw the shot 49 feet even to win the event. Shoemaker, the sophomore, put the shot 38 feet, 9 inches for ninth place among the 33 competitors who registered a qualifying mark.
