A retired FBI agent says the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie may not fit the typical profile of a kidnapping for ransom. Instead, the former investigator suggests the case could involve a more personal, potentially chilling motive. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, but the perspective adds a new layer to the ongoing investigation as leads continue to be followed.
"There's too much involved. There are too many ways people can get caught," Harry Trombitas told Yahoo! about the possibility that the kidnapping was for money. "[The motive] could be for revenge of some type, anger or it could be for a third purpose that we're just not even aware of," he added.
Parade reached out to former NYPD detective David Sarni, who is a professor at John Jay College, to get his take on the possible motive in the case. For Sarni, there just isn't enough information at this point."The detectives still are unable to tie the evidence to a cause for the Nancy’s abduction. I haven’t changed my opinion on a motive because I let facts obtained determine it. I don’t have a motive because of that," Sarni says.
Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. In his latest interview with NBC News, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said that he believes that Guthrie was targeted.
"We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we, we can't, we're not 100% sure of that," Nanos said in the interview. "So it'd be silly to tell people, 'Yeah, don't worry about it. You're, you're not his target.' Don't think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you're safe. No, keep your wits about you."
