Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that, be it Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, or any other cricketer, if they are performing and are fit enough to hold their spot, they should be picked. This statement seems to be right, as experience is something that often counts in world-class tournaments.
India's chances to win the upcoming World Cup in 2027 would only be given air if their two veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are part of the fixtures. Keeping up with their form, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma rightly deserve a spot in the XI; however, the assurance is yet to come from the Indian selectors and the head coach.
Boria Majumdar asked Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian cricketer, about his opinion on Gautam Gambhir as a white-ball coach in the Indian team. Gambhir's former teammate heaped praises on him and backed his style of coaching.
"Gautam, I think he has done a very good job with the team. No matter what people say, there have been a lot of changes and adjustments, but yes, everyone has their own different style of working.
"He has a very, very sharp brain; he understands the game really well. He was a captain here (at Kolkata Knight Riders); he made this team very successful. I think when he took over as the Indian head coach, in the public's eyes, everybody had some opinions, but you need to just shut your ears and focus on your target and do what you need to," he said.
He then backed Gambhir as a hardworking character in whichever role he has seen him. He also credited him for shaping India into an unbeatable side in ICC events.
"Gautam was a hardworking player, and his hardwork as a coach has developed a culture within the team. Today, Team India looks like a team with a champion mindset, and the results are visible. The dressing room talks are very important for this."
They should be picked if they are performing and are fit, Harbhajan Singh
The second question that followed was about his point of view on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's chances to feature in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup in 2027. He answered, saying that a player should be picked as long as he is performing.
"I think as long as a player is performing and fit to play, I think you should pick them based on their performances and not just their age. I think age is just a number, you know, but what they have is not what many people have. If they are playing well, India should pick them straight away," opined Harbhajan Singh.
The legendary Indian spinner also noted that Kohli has been in peak form ever since the South Africa series, and Rohit Sharma has worked immensely to regain his fitness, citing the World Cup in 2027.

The Indian opener Rohit Sharma is no longer the captain of the Indian team, and hence, his chances to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup seem to depend on whether he keeps performing for them with the bat and is fit enough to take the field.
The same is with Indian legend Virat Kohli; however, it seems understandable that India cannot play without their two veterans in South Africa. The tracks are bouncy and fast, and often offer much more to the bowlers; hence, experienced batters are a priority on such tracks.
The two cricketers are also eyeing to avenge the defeat in the previous World Cup of 2023. Rohit has won all except for an ODI World Cup in his career, while Virat Kohli has it all, but would surely want to make his farewell World Cup memorable.
