Kevin Willard wanted to clear the air with reporters after Friday afternoon’s first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Utah State.
No, it had nothing to do with anything No. 8 seed Villanova didn’t do during its 86-76 loss to the 9th-seeded Aggies in the West Region battle in San Diego. Instead, it had everything to do with something the Wildcats head coach said to a sideline reporter during a first-half timeout.
During that interview with TNT’s Lauren Shehadi, Willard was frustrated with his Villanova team’s defense against Utah State and didn’t mind telling the country about it. In fact, he got a little sarcastic while doing it.
“I’m gonna fire my staff,” Willard told Shehadi, who shot back to Willard, saying “Not now!” before the interview kept going and Willard kept going, unfortunately.
“Yeah, I am,” Willard said. “Because we’ve given up 8 points on underneath out-of-bounds defense. The only thing I’m gonna do is fire them and get a new staff.”
So, naturally, with it being 2026, there was a backlash from Willard’s remarks, even though it appeared that Willard was just being wildly sarcastic, if a little bit too much.
After Friday’s loss, Willard had a little message to reporters in the postgame press conference about all the criticism for his staff changes comments.
“It’s a joke,” said Willard, who was then told by a reporter how much criticism he had been receiving for the remarks that went viral.
“I don’t care. Welcome to my life,” Willard shot back. “It’s a joke.”
