ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Four Rochester police officers have been shot since Christmas, prompting questions about whether this is the most dangerous time to be a police officer.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean looked into the number of Rochester officers shot in the last 22 years. The numbers show 2021 and 2022 were off the charts dangerous, but now there have been four officers shot in three and a half months.
“Do you think this is the most dangerous time it’s ever been to be a police officer?” Brean asked.
“I think many would say yes,” Burch said.
James Burch is with the National Policing Institute. The national numbers are going down — 687 police killed in 2021 and 109 last year — but Burch thinks that data can be misleading.
“And I’ll tell you over the last 10 years on average approximately 60,000 are assaulted every year,” Burch said.
“So do you think this is the most dangerous time to be a police officer?” Brean asked.
“The best way to answer that question is every time is the most dangerous time to be a police officer,” Burch said.
The Rochester police numbers break into two decades. From 2006 to 2015, 25 officers were shot. From 2016 to now, 47 officers have been shot.

Three officers were shot on a domestic violence call in December, 2025. Technology can help make it safer.
Police used drones to find the suspect hiding this morning. News10NBC found three drones in the air at one time.
“I’ve watched all the video from the drone and its truly amazing work and amazing technology,” Chief David Smith said.
“Would it be fair to say that technology increases officer safety?” Brean asked.
“I think we just saw a great example of it. The fact that the drone was able to deploy and locate that suspect quickly,” Burch said.
“Certainly no other officers were injured and that’s the main point,” Burch said.
The Rochester Police Department has a fleet of 10 to 15 drones. The Sheriff’s Office has 25 and the State Police in the region have 12.
