Ex-KKR opener doubts Blessing Muzarabani’s impact in IPL 2026

KKR picked Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement bowler for the upcoming season; however, former Indian player Aakash Chopra believes he would not be of great use in the competition.

The Kolkata Knight Riders struggled with their poor form in the previous edition of the IPL. However, their bowling deck contained all cards from their victorious 2024 season except for Mitchell Starc. Despite that, they finished eighth in the points table.

Kolkata Knight Riders looked forward to filling in for every weak link in the side. They picked new openers like Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. They released Andre Russell and played a massive gamble to get futuristic options like Cameron Green and Matheesha Pathirana.

KKR have not yet announced a replacement for Harshit Rana. When a user questioned Aakash Chopra on his remarks over who the Knight Riders should appoint as his replacement, the former star said:

"Even I thought they would be taking someone as his replacement, but it seems they are not willing to do that. I don't know. They also do not have many options."

He then claimed that despite the fact that Blessing Muzarabani had a terrific World Cup, he would not be equally effective in the IPL under Indian conditions. Muzarabani claimed 13 wickets in 6 innings and picked up the majority of the games in Sri Lanka.

"I am not very hopeful that he would be able to replicate his commanding form from the T20 World Cup in the IPL. But this is what I think; maybe I am wrong, and then I would be the first one to raise my hand and admit my mistake," said Aakash Chopra.

"But the length around which he does most of his bowling, the type of pitches in India. I am not 100% certain about his impact. It still works in the powerplay with the new ball, but not in the death. And he might have to bowl an over or two in the death overs, due to Pathirana and Harshit's absence," he added.

Sir @cricketaakash answering my question which I had asked. Should KKR take replacement for Harshit ? And who should be the replacement? KKR may not take replacement for Harshit ? pic.twitter.com/jcaPilQ6H2

Simarjeet Singh might be picked as Harshit Rana's replacement

Kolkata Knight Riders are severely out of options in the bowling deck. First of all, they did not pick many known names in their Indian bowling deck and largely relied on overseas players like Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rehman.

Following the controversy, Mustafizur was snubbed from participating in the IPL; on the other hand, Matheesha Pathirana injured himself three matches into the T20 World Cup 2026. Since then, the player has been under rehab in Sri Lanka.

The latest reports revealed that Pathirana would not be available for the first quarter of the tournament. Indian pacer Harshit Rana, who was their lead pacer last season, has also been ruled out due to an injury.

KKR have tried several options in the form of replacements. They conducted bowling trials and, as per media reports, former CSK pacer Simarjeet Singh is currently the frontrunner for the position.

Kolkata Knight Riders Possible Playing 12

Kolkata Knight Riders named Ajinkya Rahane as the captain for this season as well. The opening might be sorted with Finn Allen opening alongside veteran star Sunil Narine. The Australian all-rounder Cameron Green might be sorted in at no. 3.

Ajinkya Rahane, the skipper, is most likely to either be promoted above Green or demoted after him. Allen is not an ideal wicket-keeping choice; hence, in his presence, KKR might need Tejasvi Singh to be sorted in the middle order.

They also have the likes of Rahul Tripathi and Manish Pandey, but Angkrish Raghuvanshi's spot in the side would be under a major threat. The youngster who has supported KKR through tough times was seen wicket-keeping for Mumbai this domestic season, and might take up the gloves to secure his spot in the side.

Rinku Singh and Rovman Powell could be KKR's firepower in the lower order alongside Ramandeep Singh. While Varun Chakravarthy is the other spinner on the side, the two pacers have to be of Indian origin, which includes Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik and Akash Deep.
