HONEOYE, N.Y. — Spring sports are kicking off, and News10NBC’s latest Scholar Athlete of the Week is making her mark both on the track and in the classroom.
Scholar Athlete: Zara OlsenThe News10NBC Team details breaking News, Traffic and Weather.Honeoye’s Zara Olsen is a star on and off the track. With just one semester left in high school, she is hoping to wrap up an already impressive legacy as a Bulldog, doing it all.
“Outdoor track, indoor track and cross country season. So I’m a runner all year long,” Olsen said.
She competes in distance, sometimes sprints and even jumping.
“And my favorite event is pole vault,” Olsen said.
Whatever the event–she’s pretty good at them.
“She came to us an outdoor track season as a seventh grader,” Moran said. “And in that season, she won her first sectional title in pole vault.”
Head Coach Pat Moran has seen Olsen’s journey from the beginning and knows that first Sectional title in seventh grade was just the beginning.
“These blue patches are for individual wins, the white patches are team wins,” Olsen said brandishing a varsity jacket chalk full of patches.”
So Olsen has all the patches to show for track, but earlier when I said Zara does it all, I meant it.
“She’s the epitome of a student athlete. I mean, she’s an honor roll student, National Honor Society,” Moran said.
Olsen is an A-plus student and an even better artist.
“I’m in an art club,” Olsen said. “I’ve painted murals around my community.”
As a senior, she gets to combine her two passions.
“I feel like it’s another way for me to sort of express myself and like express my emotions. And track is definitely another good way for me to do that,” Olsen said.
So Zara Olsen doesn’t have a lot left to prove.
“Big shoes to fill in, not just from a track standpoint,” Moran said. “An amazing young lady who just brings so much to our team above and beyond her jumping and her running abilities.”
A star on and off the track, but when she leaves, it’s not the wins, the murals or even the grades she’s most proud of.
“I want to be remembered for my kindness. I just try my best to be a good person and bring others up around me,” Olsen said.
