In the end, Croke rode the strength of several key endorsements, including from Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Attorney General Kwame Raoul, to a victory in the tight race.
As part of her campaign platform, Croke has pledged to implement software that shows “the full lifecycle” of every single dollar allocated and spent from the state’s budget, according to her website.
She also has pledged to modernize contract systems for state vendors, to continue pushing the governor’s office to maintain balanced budgets, and to increase enforcement of the Prevailing Wage Act.
According to the state of Illinois, the state’s comptroller is the chief “fiscal control officer.” The state’s Constitution requires the comptroller to maintain Illinois’ fiscal accounts and to order payments into and out of the various appropriated funds approved by the General Assembly.
That workload is immense, with the comptroller’s office handling more than 15 million transactions in fiscal year 2025 according to Mendoza’s office.
In addition to making those payments, the comptroller is required to generate reports on what bills have been paid and which remain outstanding, and how much state employees are earning and spending .
