Uma Thurman is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but she never planted roots in Tinseltown.
“I actually always wished I had moved to Los Angeles,” Thurman, 55, told InStyle in an interview published Wednesday, March 18. “I even got an apartment there at one point because I was working there really frequently, and as soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within, like, six weeks.”
Thurman decided to enter her chapter of motherhood while living close to her family instead of staying in L.A. Unfortunately, she “had to pay out months of rent, and it still nags at her,” per the outlet. (Thurman shares kids Maya, 27, and Levon, 24, with ex-husband Ethan Hawke and daughter Luna, 13, with ex Arpad Busson.)
The Kill Bill actress continued, “I never did time in Los Angeles, and because of that, I kind of never integrated into the community of my own profession, and I think that’s too bad. I had more of a community with the other mothers at pickup on 16th Street and Rutherford Place, and that’s OK. But I wish I’d had that chapter. I think I really would have liked it.”

Despite her moving plans being derailed decades ago, Thurman looks back on her life and career with a smile.
“I think the choice to be happy is one that should be made, regardless of any conditions,” she reflected. “Anyone who doesn’t consider their own agency isn’t worth being in any relationship with.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Thurman couldn’t help but gush over Maya’s recent Valentine’s Day nuptials with Christian Lee Hutson. Thurman said the New York City wedding was “perfect” and “pretty epic.”
Exes Thurman and Ethan, 55, were in attendance along with several of Maya’s Stranger Things costars for the big day. Photos from the event obtained by People showed Maya walking on an NYC sidewalk wearing a custom Prada wedding dress. Thurman, for her part, looked chic in a light blue floral gown with matching blue flats next to the blushing bride.

Maya broke her silence on her nuptials for the first time earlier this month, telling People that married life has been “absolutely fantastic.”
“I’m a very, very lucky person who’s very happy right now,” she gushed. “And yeah, couldn’t be more grateful.”
After seeing her eldest daughter walk down the aisle, Thurman is looking forward to witnessing another milestone in another one of her kids’ lives very soon — Luna heading to high school.
“I will have a different time structure in my life that is quite exciting to imagine,” Thurman said. “It’s already very different to have one child [at home] vs. three children in different schools. I am finding I have a lot of oxygen for more that is outside this house.”
