Police probe into Andrew ‘may expand to include corruption offences’

The police inquiry into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is likely to expand to include alleged corruption offences, it has been reported.

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office last month after emails released by the US Department of Justice appeared to show the former prince sharing confidential documents with Jeffrey Epstein while serving as UK trade envoy.

Thames Valley Police is also assessing claims that Epstein procured a woman to travel to Windsor for “sexual purposes” involving Mountbatten Windsor in 2010.

But the force’s probe into the former duke will likely be widened to include alleged offences related to corruption, The Times has reported.

Mountbatten-Windsor has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The Times cited one police source as saying the “legal bar” for misconduct in public office offences is high, adding: “There was always an issue over whether he was actually a public official at the time, whether he actually signed any papers. It’s not surprising that they are having to look at broader offences.”

Emails released by the DoJ appeared to show Mountbatten-Windsor had shared confidential reports with Epstein related to his visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore while serving as UK trade envoy – a role he held between 2001 and 2011.
