Virginia Couple Gives Twins Unique Southern Names  Inspired by Stunning View From Tennessee Hospital Room

Many parents are eager to tell you about their child's name, especially when they are named after a beloved family member or a favorite character (my oldest is named after the mom from The Shining). Every once in a while you will meet a parent who shares an even deeper story about their child's name, like how they were given the moniker as a nod to their very own birth story.

That's what happened when a couple welcomed their twin boys in a hospital another state away near the University of Tennessee, after an unexpected medical test turned into a story of loss and survival. Keep reading to learn more about this inspiring story.

A Virginia Couple Welcomed Preemie Twins While Out of Town

Kaitlin Carver and her husband traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee while she was 28 weeks pregnant with twin boys. While Carver had been feeling great during her pregnancy, according to Today, she was told to travel to Knoxville to see a specialist after it was discovered that one of her twins might have a cleft lip. The night before the consultation everything changed, and her seemingly uncomplicated pregnancy took a turn for the worse when the mother-to-be's water broke.

Located almost 100 miles away from her OBGYN and her support system, the couple suddenly found themselves alone in the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, where they were told that one of the twins' amniotic sacs had ruptured. “They said, ‘It looks like you’re going to be here with us for a while, we’d like to get you to 34 weeks,’” she said in an interview with Today.

However, that was just the beginning of the couple's story, because her husband received a call a few weeks later letting him know that his father had suffered a massive stroke, and he was needed back at home, which is where he went. All of this happened when the couple was at their most vulnerable, so far from home, and scared about what was going to happen with their babies. However, the pair said they found an unlikely source of comfort in the nurses and doctors at the medical center. “The staff treated us like family,” the husband recalled.

Sadly, after her husband left to visit his father, it became clear the twins weren't going to make it to the 34-week mark, and he was put in an impossible situation where he had to say his final goodbye to his father before returning to his wife. While the new dad didn't make it in time to watch the miracle of birth, he was there in time to help his wife decide what to name the twins, which is when the couple told Today that they felt inspired by everything they'd gone through.

Ultimately, they landed on the name Knox as a nod to the location where the new family began, and Neyland, the name of the University of Tennessee's stadium, where the Carver's late father had played football.

“It’s always going to be a reminder,” the proud papa said of the decision, “of where they started and where they come from.”

The University of Tennessee is a Great Place to Visit

While I absolutely adore a baby name with meaning, it's no surprise that the family were so inspired to choose these names. The area around the University of Tennessee is absolutely stunning, and even under non-life changing scenarios, it would be one to draw inspiration from.

According to the Knoxville visitor's guide, travelers here have no shortage of things to doduring their stay, including:

Catching a University of Tennessee game at Neyland Stadium (I'm sure the Carver kids will spend lots of time here when they're older)Tour the McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture, the free Smithsonian affiliate has a rotating list of exhibits that are sure to offer something for everyoneStroll some of the many green spaces, including the World's Fair Park and the pedestrian footbridge of Clinch AvenueBoating enthusiasts can even catch a ride on the Star of Knoxville Tennessee Riverboat cruise, which offers a new way to view the region

While I'm sure this was a terrifying time for the Carver family, it's nice to know that they do have fond memories of the people they met and the kindness they were shown during their lowest moments, highlighting just the type of people that visitors to the area can expect to run into when they travel here.
