The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said it identified the body of a deceased individual found near Snow Camp.
The body, found on Wednesday, Mar. 18, is that of 39-year-old William Calice Cooper III of Alamance County. He was found by a resident doing agricultural work on a field near Moon Lindley Road.
As of writing, the sheriff’s office said the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature and there are no signs of foul play. However, a cause of death has yet to be determined, and the office is working with the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to find out what happened.
In the office’s Thursday release, it said Cooper is believed to be the same person who successfully evaded police capture around one week ago.
“The discovery follows an incident reported on Thursday, March 12, when deputies received a call about a suspicious person in the same general area,” the release read. “The individual fled on foot into a wooded area before deputies arrived. Deputies searched for approximately an hour but were unable to locate him at that time. Based on the location and other factors, investigators believe the individual who fled on March 12 and the man found deceased on March 18 are the same person.”
The release said there is no on-going threat to the community as the sheriff’s office continues its investigation.
