Tom Georgeson, Boys from the Blackstuff and Doctor Who actor, dies aged 88

Tom Georgeson, who was famous for starring in the BBC’s Boys from the Blackstuff, has died at the age of 88.

The star, who also played two supporting roles in Doctor Who, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning (18 March), his nephew Danny Conway told the Liverpool Echo.

“[I'm] gutted because we weren't expecting it,” he said. “Last time I spoke to him he was in good health. I woke up to that news today and it's just sad. I was really proud of him and felt lucky to have a famous uncle."

The Liverpool-born actor enjoyed an acting career spanning decades. He first appeared on screen in the 1960s in ITV’s anthology series Armchair Theatre.

Other early roles included Z Cars and prominent parts in multiple plays at the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres.

However, it was Georgeson's appearance on the BBC's Boys from the Blackstuff in 1982 that saw him really rise to fame. The show focused on the everyday struggles of a group of Liverpool labourers on the dole in Margaret Thatcher's Britain.

He then landed a small role in Coronation Street as Eddie Royle, before going on to play other supporting parts on shows such as Between the Lines, Holby City, The Bill and Brookside.

Georgeson appeared twice in Doctor Who over the years, first as Kavell in Genesis of the Daleks in Tom Baker’s first season as the Doctor, and then as a detective in Logopolis, the final serial of season 18 of the show.

Other TV credits included the BBC series The Treasure Seekers, in which he starred alongside Peter Capaldi.

Christopher Eccleston has paid tribute to Georgeson by sharing a photo of the actor on his Instagram account.

On the big screen, Georgeson's notable roles included the 1988 movie A Fish Called Wanda, in which he appeared alongside John Cleese, and 2006’s Notes on a Scandal, which also starred Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett.

A spokesperson for the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres shared a tribute following the sad news of the star's passing, reading: "We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Georgeson – a much‑loved Liverpool actor whose talent, generosity and unmistakable presence shaped so many moments on our stages since he first performed with us in the 1970s.

"Tom was one of our city’s great actors, and we’re grateful and proud to have been an artistic home he returned to throughout his career. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Georgeson is survived by his wife Prim and his children Richard and Roslyn.
