What will happen at State Street for Shamrock Shuffle runners? What to know

The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle, long considered the unofficial kickoff to outdoor running season in Chicago, will step off this weekend, but runners may have noticed a potential hiccup on the course.

That’s because construction of the State Street bridge continues, leaving part of the Shuffle’s course unexpectedly unusable.

Construction at the bridge began in April 2025 and was expected to continue until November. The timeline was later extended into January “after additional steel repairs were identified during planned removals on the east side of the bridge,” according to the city.

But as of March, the bridge remained closed. According to the site TrafficNet, the strip was expected to reopen by “mid-March.”

Organizers said they are aware of the bridge remaining closed for repairs.

“We’re aware the State Street Bridge is closed for repairs. We’re working with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Department of Transportation to reopen a portion of the bridge to participants on race day,” the Shuffle told NBC Chicago.

Here’s a map of the course:

Participants will lace up on March 22 to step off — and finish — in Grant Park for the Shamrock Shuffle 8K run and 2-mile walk.
