Part of I-294 in the north suburbs was completely cleared of traffic Wednesday afternoon as part of a police chase on the busy tri-state tollway, with Sky5 video showing at least three police SUV cars closing in on a light colored sedan.
The chase, in the northbound tri-state lanes, entered Lake County about 11:45 a.m., passing Half Day Road and approaching Lake Forest. Behind the chase, more than a dozen police cars could be seen helping to slow traffic.
Sky5 reporter Mike Lorber said the chase has been happening “for a long period of time,” and that police were using “an extreme amount of caution” as the chase was a “lower speed pursuit.”
“At some points, it was 25 miles-per-hour, sometimes 45 miles-per-hour,” Lorber said. Lorber added Sky5 learned of the chase as it crossed Lake Cook Road in Deerfield.
Near Buckley Road, officers were able to pop one of the car’s tires, video from Sky5 showed. The car eventually slowed and pulled over, with several armed officers approaching the car.
“They were able to deflate and damage the front right tire but the vehicle continued to drive for about a mile before it pulled over,” Lorber said.
Just south of Gurnee, near 137 and Buckley Road, officers took one person out of the car and into custody. The person was placed into a Bensenville police car.
It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone else was in the sedan.
As of 12:30 p.m., traffic was getting by in three lanes, with law enforcement vehicles on the shoulder, and an officer directing cars.
Illinois State Police referred NBC Chicago to the Bensenville Police Department for more information, saying Bensenville police were assisting with the chase. Police in Bensenville did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for information.
