Illinois politics will look different after Tuesday’s 2026 Primary Election, with new nominees for five Congressional seats, a U.S. Senate seat and the comptroller’s offices come November.
Some of the seats, including the Senate seat vacated by longtime Rep. Dick Durbin, haven’t been open in decades. In the crowded U.S. House primary, dozens of Democratic ran for open seats.
As of Wednesday morning, many races have already been called, but some are still outstanding. Here’s a look at who won in the 2026 Illinois Primary Tuesday, and which races still remain too close to call.
Races that still haven’t been called
Illinois Comptroller
As of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, State Rep. Margaret Croke, who was endorsed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, is holding a lead of just over 25,000 votes over State Sen. Karina Villa, with 99.2 percent of precincts reporting.
The race comes as Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza announced she would not seek reelection after 10 years in office.
Bryan Drew ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
Cook County Assessor
With nearly 99% of precincts reporting as of 5:30 a.m., incumbent Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, who was seeking a third term in office, was trailing challenger Pat Hynes by just over 30,000 votes.
Hynes, the Lyons Township assessor, grew up in Beverly and worked in the Cook County Assessor’s Office for more than 20 years, according to his campaign bio.
