’70s Legends Ranked ‘The Most Underrated Classic Rock Band’

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones. The Beatles, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Ask any internet search engine or technologically advanced chatbot to name the best bands of the late ’60s / early ’70s, and all the above are spit out like the opening riff of “Smoke on Water.”

And, yes, the usual suspects are incredible. But every now and then, a band that helped define the era -- yet often gets overlooked -- deserves some love, too. Giving credit where it’s due, The Saturday Evening Post has dropped a list of the “10 Most Underrated Classic Rocks Bands,” and the results are a banger playlist worthy of your Spotify.

At the top? Three Dog Night, the trio behind “12 gold records in three years, 83,000 people in three concerts, and $125,000 in 60 minutes,” Rolling Stone rattles off. Fronted by three lead singers, the band was founded in 1967 in Los Angeles by Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. Their sound is a clever mix of rock, boogie, classic, and R&B, and the force behind 21 straight Top 40 hits.

“While it’s true that ‘Joy to the World’ and ‘One’ remain incredibly popular, the OTHER 19 Top 40 hits suggest that the group’s body of work is consistently overlooked,” the Post writes. “Though the band’s original run came to an end in the mid-1970s among the usual in-fighting and substance abuse that seemingly plagues most bands, they did pull several classic members (including co-founders and vocalists Hutton, Negron, and Wells) back together in the early ’80s.”

In 2015, Wells died at the age of 74, followed by Negron this past February. Negron launched a solo career in 1991, releasing seven albums between 1995 and 2017, and continued performing until his death at age 83, per People.

Hutton, now 83, continues to front Three Dog Night, who are still touring today, the Post reports.

    On This Day …

The month of March was massive historically for the group.

On this day in 1970, Three Dog Night were in their It Ain't Easy era, preparing for the release of their fourth studio album on March 31, 1970. A year later, they were selling out Madison Square Garden and watching “Joy to the World” debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 58. It was the start of a six-week run.

In March 1976, the band released American Pastime, their 10th album that featured "Everybody's a Masterpiece.” It would be the band’s final album before their breakup.

“Incidentally, that name? It’s an Aboriginal phrase referring to the cold,” the Post shares. “If it's going to be very cold when the sun goes down, you need to allow three dogs in the bed to keep you warm. That is, a Three Dog Night.”

From charting hits to cultural lore behind their moniker, Three Dog Night have left their paw prints all over rock history, proving their music — and their legacy — is anything but ordinary.
