Not Gambhir but Rohit Sharma and 3 others decided on Suryakumar Yadav’s fate as India captain

For nearly a year and a half, the assumption was that Suryakumar Yadav’s rise as India’s T20I captain had Gautam Gambhir’s fingerprints all over it. Their previous equation at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made that theory easy to buy. But the man himself has now set the record straight, and the real decision-makers were sitting elsewhere.

In a candid interaction, Suryakumar revealed that the call to hand him India’s T20I captaincy after the 2024 World Cup wasn’t called by Gambhir at all. Instead, it was a collective call taken by then BCCI secretary Jay Shah, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Rahul Dravid and outgoing captain Rohit Sharma.

    Suryakumar Yadav reveals secret

Right after India ended their ICC trophy drought with a T20 World Cup 2024 win in Barbados, Rohit announced his retirement from the format. He, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja all bid adieu to the format and India needed to stabalise post-retirements. To be at the head of the crown, there were assumptions that Hardik Pandya will be the straightaway choice. However, it didn’t happen.

Suryakumar recalled the exact moment he got to know about the decision, and it wasn’t a long-drawn process. “There was a time when Jay bhai, the BCCI secretary at that time, called me three or four days before the Sri Lanka series. He called me and told me that they were making me the captain of the T20 team going forward,” he said while speaking to PTI.

While that call delivered the news, Suryakumar was already reading between the lines. “But I was pretty sure that it was all being planned by Rohit bhai and Ajit bhai at that time. Gautam bhai came in later. They, along with Rahul sir, had discussed it with Jay bhai. Then they decided that I should lead India going forward.“

At that point, Hardik Pandya had been leading India regularly in T20Is and had just played a key role in the World Cup win. Yet, the management chose to look beyond the obvious. Suryakumar wasn’t even the vice-captain and still was elevated to India’s T20I captaincy.

The call has aged well. Under Suryakumar, India have been unbeatable. Perhaps the greatest T20 team ever seen. He has won 42 of his first 52 matches in charge, with a win percentage north of 80, and remains unbeaten in bilateral series. The bigger validation came in 2026, when India defended their T20 World Cup title at home, becoming the first team to do so. The tenure includes series wins in Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia and the Asia Cup as well.
