ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Aquinas Institute girls basketball team is gearing up for the state final four this weekend, marking their third consecutive appearance. The Irish are confident they can clinch a state championship this year.
“Really high. I’m really confident this time, and I feel like we got it this time,” said Loren Green, an Aquinas junior.
“We all want the same thing. We’re all on beast mode,” said Harvey, a junior.
Green, along with teammates AJ Orr and Jade Harvey, form a formidable trio for the Lil Irish. They have achieved three Section Five titles and three regional titles, but a state title has remained elusive.
“I think bringing those different skill sets and those different mechanics of our skill sets together is making us dominant,” Orr said.
Head Coach Mark Loria reflected on the team’s journey, saying, “We always talk about climbing the mountain and we’ve done that for the past several years, and then we get close to the summit, and then we get kicked back and we’re down at the bottom of the mountain again.”
Despite a challenging mid-season, the team has rebounded with a strong performance, going from a 3-8 start to a 10-1 record since. Orr expressed unwavering confidence despite the slump, saying, “No,” Orr said when asked if her confidence ever waivered, “I’m not worried about going on a senior trip because we’re going to be back here at the state tournament.”

“It’s going to be really fun. Cool experience. Especially to be back with my sisters and back playing on the same court that we was on last year. Another chance at a ring,” added Harvey.
The Lil Irish will face William Floyd in the semifinals on Thursday. The winner will advance to the championship game on Friday.
“That’s my big thing. I just want to win,” said Green.
The games will be played at Hudson Valley Community College. The semifinal is scheduled to tipoff at 2:30 pm.
