ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police have made an arrest in the murder of a man found stabbed and beaten in an Avenue D drug house last November.
William Cooke, 29, of Rochester, was charged with second-degree murder Tuesday after police saw him on Joseph Avenue and took him into custody after a foot chase. He is accused in the killing of Aaron Johnson-Haygood, 37, who was found dead the morning of Nov. 16, 2025 in the vacant front apartment at 484 Ave. D.
Police said the building was an active drug house, used to both sell and use drugs, and detectives believe the murder was related to drug sales.
According to police, Cooke is a predicate felon currently on federal probation for a 2019 conviction of possession of a controlled substance, with the intent to distribute and possess a firearm as part of a drug trafficking crime. At that time, he was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison. He was released at some point, but police are not certain when. They say he has outstanding arrest warrants for violating his federal probation, plus a City of Rochester arrest warrant for criminal contempt.
Cooke is expected to be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18 in Rochester City Court, on both the murder charge and the city warrant
