Iconic ’80s Singer Pays Tribute to Legendary Rocker 3 Years After His Death

Bruce Springsteen, the legendary singer-songwriter who dominated the rock music scene across several decades, has released a cover of The Pogue's "A Rainy Night in Soho" (1986) as a touching tribute to the band's late frontman, Shane MacGowan, who died in 2023 at the age of 65.

The cover is part of a larger tribute album titled 20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan, which has tapped major names such as Hozier, recent Oscar winner Jessie Buckley, Johnny Depp, Kate Moss and more as contributors on the album that honors the life and legacy of MacGowan, who was a trailblazer during the punk music movement in the '80s and '90s as he sang about Irish nationalism and history.

In a statement published by Springsteen in 2023 after MacGowan's death, the American rocker wrote, "Shane was one of my all-time favorite writers. The passion and deep intensity of his music and lyrics is unmatched by all but the very best in the rock and roll canon. I was fortunate to spend a little time with Shane and his lovely wife Victoria the last time we were in Dublin. He was very ill, but still beautifully present in his heart and spirit. His music is timeless and eternal. I don’t know about the rest of us, but they’ll be singing Shane’s songs 100 years from now."

Along with releasing a cover of "A Rainy Night in Soho," Bruce Springsteen has penned a new tribute to Shane MacGowan."Every once in a while, every once in a great while an artist comes along whose voice seems to speak to history itself. The song "A Rainy Night in Soho" was originally released by MacGowan's band The Pogues in 1986 as part of their EP Poguetry in Motion. Springsteen's version of the song joins a collection of covers performed by other major artists over the years, including Depp, Bono and Bob Dylan.

The English and Irish musician was a talented lyricist who strived to tell the stories of Irish immigrants and national pride. MacGowan's contributions to Irish culture through his music are evident in his various critically acclaimed songs and albums, including The Pogues' 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God and the controversial song "Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six" (1988). He also wrote the popular song "Fairtytale of New York" (1987) — a fan-favorite Christmastime tune and the U.K.'s most-played of its kind of the 21st century.

MacGowan struggled with severe alcohol and drug abuse throughout his life, as well as a series of health issues which interfered with his quality of life. Following a fall in 2015, he was forced to use a wheelchair up until his death in 2023. In 2022, MacGowan was diagnosed with viral encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain. The following year, MacGowan died from pneumonia, but not before several celebrities and artists visited him while he underwent hospital treatment, including Springsteen and his Pogues bandmates Terry Woods and Spider Stacy.

20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan will be released on Nov. 13.
