A Chicago firefighter has died hours after being severely injured while fighting an apartment building fire on Chicago’s North Side, sources told NBC Chicago.
The firefighter, whose identity has not yet been released, was critically injured Monday afternoon battling a blaze in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood, sources said.
The fire was reported before 12:15 p.m. in a multi-story building along North Shore Avenue near North Ravenswood Avenue.
A Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said the firefighter was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
Video posted on the Citizen app showed heavy smoke pouring out of the building’s roof before the blaze was eventually extinguished.
Firefighters and city officials could be seen at the hospital Monday evening.
According to a fundraising page for the firefighter, the injuries were suffered when he fell through a floor and into flames below, suffering burns on much of his body. The Chicago Fire Department has not yet released details on the injuries, however.
The page said he was a dedicated firefighter and father, with another baby on the way.
