Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reckons that Shreyas Iyer stands a chance of being the next Indian T20I captain if he does well in leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. The PBKS captain did not find a place in India’s squad in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026 and hasn’t featured in a T20I since 2023. Chopra, however, feels that not only will Iyer find a place in the T20I setup in the future but could also potentially lead the team.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra opined that if Iyer could present his captaincy credentials with another phenomenal season for PBKS in IPL 2026, then he could possibly become the next India captain. The ex-KKR star said that while Shreyas couldn’t make it to the T20 World Cup squad, there was a chance of him securing a spot in the line-up in the future as a middle-order slot could potentially became vacant.
“Shreyas Iyer, I felt he would come in the T20 World Cup team, but he couldn’t. I envisage that a place might become vacant in the middle order. So, can Shreyas Iyer come there? If he presents a captaincy claim once again, he could possibly be the next T20 captain for India. Why not?” Chopra said.
PBKS, led by Shreyas, finished at the top of the points table in IPL 2025, with 9 wins and 4 losses from 14 games. They made it to the final as well, but missed out on securing their maiden title as RCB edged past them by 6 runs. Iyer has a lot of experience in terms of leadership. He captained KKR in 2024 and led them to their 3rd title. Iyer was then released and moved to PBKS. He has also led Mumbai in white-ball formats in the domestic circuit.
