The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now fearing a possible ban as the Government has initiated an investigation to find out whether any illegal practices were done during the election of the cricket board. According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, government interference can lead any national cricket board to a ban from international cricket.
According to the latest ESPNCricinfo report, the BCB has warned the Bangladesh government against interfering in board matters, after the formation of an investigation committee by the sports ministry to look into allegations of malpractice during last year's BCB elections.
BCB has issued a long statement regarding the current incident related to last year’s election. Allegations of a corrupt election started to be raised days before the election. Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal alleged that Aminul had interfered in the election process. In protest, Iqbal withdrew his nomination as well. Aminul Islam Bulbul was re-elected as the head of the cricket board through the election in October 2025.
In a significant move, the Sports Ministry formed a five-member body to investigate the nature of the election. According to the media reports, the ministry gave the specially formed investigation team 15 working days, from March 11, to conduct the investigation.
BCB, headed by Aminul Islam, is under fire
The cricket board, led by Aminul Islam, came under immense pressure as soon as the Sports Ministry formed the team to look after the election matters. The cricket board feared that the move by the government could attract global attention.
“In this context, the matter has been informally referenced in discussions with senior representatives of the ICC leadership. It was indicated that developments which could be interpreted as interference in the affairs of a democratically elected cricket board may raise governance concerns within the international cricket framework,” BCB said in their official statement.
Why can the ICC impose a ban on the national cricket board?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) mandates that all member boards operate autonomously, free from government or public body interference in their administration, management, and selection decisions. Under Article 2.4 D of the ICC Constitution, political interference can result in severe penalties, including suspension from international cricket, freezing of funding, and loss of voting rights.
In the past, the cricket boards of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka were suspended from international cricket for political or government interference.
“Given the potential implications for Bangladesh cricket at the international level, the BCB considers it important to address this matter with due care and transparency. Before initiating any formal communication or proceedings with the ICC, the BCB believes it is appropriate to engage directly with the National Sports Council to seek clarification regarding the context, intent, and possible implications of the gazette,” the BCB further mentioned in their statement.
"BCB has requested the National Sports Council to close this matter in a manner that safeguards the stability, independence, and continued progress of Bangladesh cricket, while also ensuring that the country's standing within the international cricket community remains fully protected," the statement continues.
