Hip-hop icon Flavor Flav is marking another year of life as he turns 67.
From chart-topping hits to cementing his legendary status in the music scene, the six-time Grammy nominee has remained a cultural force to this day.
The 67-year-old artist, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton, was born in Roosevelt, New York, in 1959 to a typical family. His father, William Drayton Sr., owned a restaurant called The Soul Diner, while his mother, Anna Drayton, worked as a church lady.
His interest in music was sparked when he would watch his mother play the organ at church and would imitate her performances.
“I realized that he has the potential that he did,” she told People, expressing her support for her son. “I started backing up and giving him the space.”
Flavor Flav also described her as his biggest inspiration in pursuing his musical career.

With the rise of hip-hop and urban culture in the 1980s, Flavor Flav embarked on his professional music career by forming the group Public Enemy along with his friend Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, also known as Chuck D.
Before their status as the influential hip-hop group, Public Enemy’s original lineup included Chuck D as the lead MC and frontman, Flavor Flav as the MC and hype man, Professor Griff (Richard Griffin) as Minister of Information and Terminator X (Norman Rogers) as the group’s original DJ.
With their decades-long presence in the hip-hop scene, Public Enemy has released a series of albums that are widely cited as some of the most acclaimed works in the genre.
This includes their debut album Yo! Bum Rush the Show in 1987, followed by their second studio album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which is celebrated as one of the greatest albums of all time.
In addition, the 1990 album Fear of a Black Planet and their fourth studio album Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black are widely regarded as hip-hop masterpieces.
Besides the album, the group also delivered chart-topping songs, with their most iconic being “Fight the Power.”
Amid its popularity, the song reached No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart.
Even with Chuck leading the vocals on “Fight the Power,” it was Flavor Flav’s role as a hype man and co-vocalist that stood out, making it their most celebrated track.
