What Were the Challenges on 'Top Chef' Season 23 Episode 2?
The Quickfire Challenge tasked the chefs with creating a savory dish based on various flavors of Talenti gelato and sorbetto tied to a certain country or region, like mango & India or mint chocolate chip & . There are seven combos for the 14 chefs, they had to serve their dishes side by side with their matching flavor/region.
The bottom dishes were from:
Brittany, who got coffee chocolate chip & Colombia and made coffee-spiced lamb tartare with crispy plantains and chili pepper aioli.Sieger, who got vanilla bean & Madagascar and made a spiced stew with strawberry snapper and uni.Duyen, who got butter pecan & the South and made pecan-crusted roasted pork loin with a peach and grape reduction.Related: ‘Top Chef’ Judge Gail Simmons Teases What Makes Season 23 ‘So Different’ (Exclusive)
The top dishes were from:
Oscar, who got caramel cookie crush & Argentina and made a cachapa with butter caramel, Fresno chilies, almonds and crispy skin provolone.Nana, who got mango & India and made curried cauliflowersteak with tomato salsa.Laurence, who got pistachio & California and made lamb Borek with apricot jam and pickled tomatillos. He ended up winning the $10,000, bringing his total up to $15,000.The Elimination Challenge saw the chefs divided into two teams of seven and they were tasked with using Carolina Reapers, which were developed in South Carolina by pepper breeder Ed Currie of (no joke) PuckerButt Farms. Their seven-course meal had to have progressively spicier dishes.
The teams were (in order of least spicy to spiciest) the green team of Sieger, Brittany, Jennifer, Jonathan, Anthony, Oscar and Rhoda, and the red team of Brandon, Sherry, Duyen, Laurence, Nana, Justin and Jassi, which was kind of an insane choice because Jassi talked about how his spice tolerance is like a 2 on a scale of 1-10.
The green team was declared the winner, with best dish going to Rhoda with her pepper-braised short rib, chili pickled pearl onions and a blistered cayenne pepper on top. Jennifer and Sieger also got shoutouts for having really good dishes.
