Car break-ins decline in Rochester yet remain a nuisance

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A series of car break-ins occurred over the weekend at Saint Bernard’s Park, a senior home on Lake Avenue. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reviewed data from the Rochester Police Department’s open data portal to compare current car break-in numbers with last year’s.

According to the RPD data, there were 99 car break-ins through January and February this year, compared to 144 during the same period last year. However, there have already been 46 thefts from cars in March alone.

Steve Markham said he saw four people trying to break into his car on Sunday morning. He used his panic button to scare them off, but his neighbor’s door handle was ripped off.

“It’s super annoying. Super annoying. That’s basically what it boils down to, right?” said Markham. “We have nothing in our car. We purposely put nothing at nothing. There’s nothing. So even when they break in, there’s nothing to even rifle through anymore. So, you know, it’s just more the annoyance of, a window breaking.”

Prince Street was also targeted by several break-ins about a month ago. Despite the decrease in overall car break-ins, residents like Markham remain frustrated.

Officials said they are unable to determine if the break-ins this year are connected.
