San Diego Humane Society is marking Coyote Awareness Week by encouraging residents to better understand the role coyotes play in the region’s ecosystem and to take steps to safely coexist with them.
The annual observance, established by Project Coyote, coincides with peak mating and pupping season from March through May, when coyotes are more active while foraging and may be seen more frequently in neighborhoods.
Coyotes are a vital part of San Diego County’s ecosystem, according to wildlife officials. As adaptable predators, they help control rodent populations, curb the spread of disease and clear carrion from the environment.
The humane society’s Project Wildlife program cared for 107 injured, sick or orphaned coyotes in 2025 and has treated 19 animals so far this year.

To reduce conflicts, the organization recommends residents:
Keep pets secure: Walk dogs on a leash and closely supervise pets when outdoors. Eliminate food sources: Secure garbage bins, bring pet food and water inside, and remove fallen fruit or spilled birdseed. Use humane hazing techniques: If a coyote approaches or acts boldly, stand tall, wave your arms, make loud noises and encourage it to leave the area.Coyotes typically avoid people but can grow accustomed to residential areas when food is readily available, officials said. Removing attractants and remaining vigilant can help maintain a healthy distance between wildlife and neighborhoods.
The humane society is also supporting a coalition of farmers, ranchers, conservation groups and animal welfare advocates seeking state funding in the 2026–27 fiscal year for a permanent Wildlife Coexistence Program within the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The effort is tied to Senate Bill 1135, introduced by Sen. Catherine Blakespear, which would formally establish the program to provide science-based responses to human-wildlife interactions.
