ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert continues into first thing Tuesday morning for two reasons: gusty winds and slick roads. A powerful cold front slicing through the region will continue to drop our temperatures back into the 20s and teens by first thing Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, rain transitions over to a couple inches of sleet and wet snow. As temperatures fall rapidly, untreated surfaces will freeze up very quickly. So watch out on any untreated surfaces: sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, etc. Monday night and into Tuesday morning.
Winds will also remain elevated into the first part of Tuesday, with gusts pushing 40-50 mph, especially near the Lake Ontario shoreline. This, combined with the higher winds we’ve dealt with over the last few days may knock down weaker branches and limbs and produce some more isolated power outages. Winds ease up into Tuesday afternoon, and our Yellow Alert will be discontinued then.
Tuesday will feature much colder air with highs in the 20s and wind chills closer to zero at times in the morning. We’ll also see some localized lake snow showers, but little in the way of additional accumulation for most areas.
