An Indiana commit, Gebhart pulled off a double repeat, defending her titles in the 50 free and 100 free, while Haddon Township sophomore Shelby Hutchinson also earned a pair of victories.
The NJSIAA doesn’t award team state titles at the meet, only individual championships. Team titles are determined in a dual meet state tournament format.
Girls’ Recap
Gebhart swam personal bests in both of her victories, taking the 50 free in 22.78 and the 100 free in 49.79.
Joining Gebhart as a repeat champion and multi-event winner was Hutchinson, who defended her title in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 52.26. Hutchinson also won the 100 back in a personal best time of 51.87.
The other multi-event winner of the meet was Haddonfield Memorial junior Audrey Derivaux, a Texas commit. Derivaux won the 200 IM in a time of 1:54.39 and the 500 free in 4:44.55.
Derivaux also split 23.24 on the leadoff leg for Haddonfield Memorial’s winning team in the 200 free relay, which won the title with a time of 1:36.91. Other team members were Lia Cottrell (24.12), Ellie McFadden (24.56) and Julia McHale (24.99).
Other event winners were:
Pingry School won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.60 behind the team of Hailey Rushforth (27.46), Alexia Davies (29.22), Tingting Luo (25.41) and Maria Pontoriero (23.51). In the 400 free relay, Chatham won in a time of 3:31.42 behind the team of Calleigh Woo (54.33), Jules McGrath (53.15), Madeline Crawford (52.10) and Avery Loock.Boys’ Recap
The boys’ meet had some controversy after two swimmers were allowed to do a re-swim in the 100 breast. .
Originally, the event was won by Lawrence senior Josh DeMarco in a time of 55.95. But officials later allowed a re-swim after Summit senior Yehor Maistruk, last year’s winner in the event and a South Carolina commit, and Westfield’s Dylan Lagrimas claimed they didn’t hear the starter due to crowd noise and entered the pool late.
Organizers offered each of the eight swimmers a chance to re-swim, but only Maistruk and Chatham’s Andrew O’Day decided to do so. The other six opted to keep their original time, although Lagrimas declined because the re-swim occurred after the 400 free relay, which he swam in.
On the re-swim, Maistruk beat DeMarco’s time to win, coming in with a time of 55.46 to repeat as champion.
The National Federation of State High School Associations has a rule where a re-swim may be given by a referee if a faulty start unfairly affected a competitor or the entire heat, particularly in championship finals.
Lawrence Township Public Schools appealed the decision to the NJSIAA, but the appeal was denied, according to NJ.com.
The two multi-event winners were Bridgewater Raritan junior Chris Wasko and Haddon Township senior Ryan Quinn.
Wasko claimed the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 free (20.38) and the 100 free (45.23) in personal best times.
He was also on two winning relay teams for Bridgewater Raritan.
In the 200 medley relay, Wasko split 20.12 in the free to help Bridgewater Raritan win with a time of 1:31.02. Other team members were Jaden Lee (22.41), Marvellous Suciayahdi (26.58) and Aaron Roy (21.91).
Wasko later anchored the school’s winning 400 free relay team, splitting 44.79 to help the squad win with a time of 3:03.64. Other team members were Lee (46.17), Greg Rydberg (47.39) and Roy (45.29).
Committed to Notre Dame, Quinn also swam a pair of personal bests to claim two wins. Quinn first won the 100 fly in 46.78, and then triumphed in the 100 back with a time of 47.44.
