How I Met Your Mother Star Defends the Sitcoms Controversial Ending: I’m a Big Supporter of It

How I Met Your Mother was one of the top sitcoms on TV when it aired in 2005, but its finale after nine seasons went down as one of the worst among fans and critics. Twelve years since its end, Neil Patrick Harris reveals he stands by the controversially hated final storylines.

Narrated by the lateBob Saget, How I Met Your Mother followed New Yorker Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as he recounts flashback stories of how he met his children's mother. The entire sitcom revolved around Ted's group of close friends, their relationship dynamics, and the infamous story of "who did Ted end up with?"

The answer was ultimately revealed in the finale at the end of Season 9 in 2014, as well as what happened to the rest of the main characters. Harris played the leading role of womanizer Barney Stinson, and told How We Made Your Mother podcast hosts Radnor and co-creator Craig Thomas that the finale worked despite fan reception.

"People ask me about the ending all the time, and I’m a big supporter of it," Harris said. "I really am. I think Barney is that guy all the way through the run of the show. He’s not going to suddenly change  overnight, and I think it would’ve been short-sighted, very ‘TV sitcom logic,’ to suddenly say,  ‘Oh, and now everything’s perfect.’"

According to critics, the finale of the sitcom undid years of character development and fan expectations. Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the sitcom! The finale revealed "the mother" was in fact Tracy McConnell (played by Cristin Milioti), but fans were gutted to learn that after years on the edge of their seats, the character had died years prior from an illness.

To make matters worse for fans, it was revealed that Ted's kids urge him to reconnect with Robin (Cobie Smulders) despite the series having made a big storyline of the two not being meant for each other. It also leads to Harris's character storyline of Barney and Robin having gotten divorced only a few years after tying the knot. According to Harris, the finale made sense in going back to the characters' original roots.
